“State Expenses” is a solo exhibition by Alexander Staub, dedicated to the artist’s personal experience in the Russian Federation since the beginning of the conflict with Ukraine. The works tell a story of internal conflict, where initial pride in national progress is replaced by disillusionment after the events of February 24, 2022.

At the heart of this narrative are the artist’s personal experiences following an anti-war protest, illustrating the harsh grip of authoritarianism in Russia. The exhibition featured more than 10 different works, including installation, art objects, photography, and video art, some of which were created in Russia, while others were produced in exile.

The “State Expenses” project, connected to themes of patriotism, identity, and resistance, serves as a reminder of the impact political actions have on individual lives and the broader social fabric.

The exhibition was organized at the tmp_space in Batumi, Georgia, in 2023.
